Moving a pool table isn’t like moving a couch. It’s heavy, awkward, and precision matters. If you’re thinking about dragging it onto a moving truck in one piece, pause, because that’s how you end up with busted slate, stripped bolts, or worse… a herniated disc.
Whether you’re taking it across town or just across the room, here’s what it takes to move a pool table the right way.
Step 1: Disassemble It… Completely
A standard slate pool table weighs between 600 to 1,000 pounds, and most of that weight isn’t friendly to shortcuts. To move it safely:
- Remove the pockets
- Take off the rails
- Peel off the felt carefully
- Unbolt and lift out each piece of slate
- Disassemble the frame and legs
Trying to skip this? Don’t. One cracked piece of slate = one ruined pool table.
Step 2: Pack and Protect Everything
- Wrap each piece of slate in moving blankets or thick padding
- Box and label bolts, hardware, and pocket parts
- Keep the felt rolled, not folded (or plan on replacing it)
Use heavy-duty stretch wrap to protect the frame and wood finish from scratches during transport.
Step 3: Prepare for Reassembly at the New Location
Pool tables must be leveled with precision after reassembly. Even small changes in the floor can affect gameplay. Most people don’t have the right tools – or patience – to get it right.
This isn’t IKEA furniture. It’s craftsmanship.
