A pool table looks solid, but it is one of the most damage-prone items you can put on a moving truck. The slate bed can crack. The felt can tear. The frame can warp if it is not supported correctly. Why Pool Tables Are Different From Other Heavy Furniture
Most heavy furniture can be disassembled and moved in pieces without much risk. Pool tables are different because the slate playing surface, which typically weighs between 150 and 450 pounds depending on the table, is not just heavy, it is also brittle. A single crack in the slate means the table plays differently forever. There is no real repair for a cracked slate short of replacing it entirely.
The felt is the other vulnerability. It tears easily, stains from moisture, and does not survive being folded or compressed during transport. Once the felt is damaged, the table needs to be refelted before it is playable again.
Disassembly Is Not Optional
Pool tables cannot be moved intact. The legs need to come off, the rails need to be removed, and the slate needs to be lifted out carefully and transported separately from the frame.
Start by removing the pockets and the rails. These are typically bolted underneath the table and can be taken off with basic tools. Keep all the hardware in labeled bags so nothing gets lost during the move. Next, the felt needs to be carefully peeled back from the slate if you want to reuse it, though many people take a move as an opportunity to replace the felt entirely.
The slate itself should be wrapped in moving blankets and transported flat, never on its edge. Even a slight tip can cause a crack if the slate shifts during transport. If your table has a three-piece slate, each section needs its own wrapping and careful handling.
Reassembly Requires Leveling
Getting a pool table to play correctly after a move is not just about putting it back together. The slate needs to be perfectly level, and that leveling process requires patience and the right tools. Even a small variance across the playing surface will cause balls to roll toward one end or drift off a straight path.
