Most belongings can be replaced if something goes wrong during a move. Artwork, antiques, heirlooms, and one-of-a-kind valuables cannot. The standard moving blanket and tape approach that works fine for a sofa is not enough for a painting, a sculpture, or a piece of furniture with genuine age and value.
Know What You Have Before You Pack It
Before you start wrapping anything, take an inventory of your high-value items. Photograph each piece from multiple angles in good lighting. Note any existing damage so you have a clear record of condition before the move begins. If you have appraisals or provenance documentation for any pieces, keep those documents accessible rather than buried in a moving box.
Framed Artwork Needs More Than a Blanket
Framed paintings and prints should be wrapped in acid-free tissue paper before anything else touches the surface. Never use bubble wrap directly against a painted canvas because the texture can transfer to the paint, especially in Florida’s heat. After the tissue paper, wrap in bubble wrap then in moving blankets. Store frames vertically rather than flat, and make sure nothing is stacked on top of them in the truck.
Antique Furniture Requires Extra Care
Avoid packing tape anywhere near the surface of wood furniture because it can pull off veneer or damage finish when removed. Use cloth straps rather than tape to secure drawers or doors. Humidity is a concern in Florida, so moving antique furniture during particularly wet weather adds risk.
Ceramics, Glass, and Sculptures
Wrap each piece individually in packing paper or foam, then place it in a box with enough padding that nothing touches the sides or top. Shake the box gently before sealing it. If you can feel movement, add more padding. Label these boxes clearly as fragile and as top-load only.
