You made it. The truck is gone, the boxes are stacked in every room, and you are officially a Florida resident. But if you moved here from out of state, the next 30 days matter more than most people realize. There is a checklist of things that need to happen, some with real deadlines, and getting them done early will save you headaches down the road.
Whether you landed in Melbourne, Palm Bay, Titusville, Rockledge, or anywhere else across Brevard County, here is a practical look at what to tackle in your first month on the Space Coast.
Week One: The Essentials First
The first week is about getting the basics in place so daily life can function. Start with your utilities if you have not already. Electric service in Brevard County is typically through Florida Power and Light or the City of Titusville depending on your location. Internet, water, and trash service will vary by city.
If you have children, contact your local school district right away. Brevard Public Schools handles enrollment for the county, and the sooner you connect with the school zone for your new address, the smoother the transition will be for your kids.
Also in the first week, file a change of address with the United States Postal Service if you have not already done so. Forwarded mail buys you time, but it is not a permanent solution.
Week Two: Your Florida Driver’s License and Vehicle Registration
Florida law requires new residents to obtain a Florida driver’s license within 30 days of establishing residency. This is one deadline you do not want to miss. You will need to visit a Brevard County Tax Collector’s office with your out-of-state license, proof of Florida residency (a lease or utility bill works), your Social Security card or number, and proof of U.S. citizenship or legal presence.
At the same time, you will need to register your vehicle in Florida and obtain Florida license plates. There are multiple Tax Collector locations across Brevard, including offices in Melbourne, Palm Bay, Titusville, and Viera. Check wait times online before you go, as some locations get busy mid-week.
Week Two and Three: Banking, Insurance, and Benefits
Update your address with your bank or credit union. While most banking is digital now, there are still situations where your mailing address on file matters for statements, tax documents, and card renewals.
Review your health insurance situation. If you moved from a state with different coverage networks, your existing plan may have limited in-network providers in Florida. Open enrollment windows and special enrollment periods after a qualifying life event like a move may allow you to make changes.
Also update your auto insurance with your new Florida address. Florida has unique insurance requirements, including Personal Injury Protection coverage, and rates can change based on your new location and zip code.
Week Three: Voter Registration and Homestead Exemption
If you plan to vote in Florida, you can register online at the Florida Division of Elections website or at any Tax Collector office. Florida has periodic registration deadlines tied to election cycles, so doing this in your first month keeps your options open.
If you purchased a home and it will be your primary residence, apply for Florida’s Homestead Exemption as soon as possible. This exemption can reduce the assessed value of your home for property tax purposes by up to $50,000. Applications are filed through the Brevard County Property Appraiser’s office, and the deadline is March 1st of the year you want the exemption to apply. If you move in early enough, do not let that date slip by.
Week Four: Healthcare, Professionals, and Community
Get your healthcare providers sorted by the end of the first month. Transfer medical and dental records to new providers in Brevard County. If you have ongoing prescriptions, update your pharmacy and confirm your medications can be filled locally without interruption.
The Space Coast has a strong sense of community, and getting plugged in early helps. Check out local Facebook groups for your city or neighborhood, visit your nearest library branch to get a card, and explore the parks and recreation programs offered by Brevard County Parks. You will find your rhythm faster than you think.
