Moving Your Garage or Workshop: How to Pack Tools and Keep Small Parts Organized

Moving a garage or workshop takes more planning than packing an ordinary room. Sharp tools, heavy equipment, loose hardware, and half-finished projects can quickly become a confusing pile. Learning how to pack tools for moving helps protect your belongings and makes it easier to rebuild an organized workspace at your new home.

Start early enough to sort carefully. A garage often contains items that have not been touched in months, so it usually takes longer than expected to decide what should move and what should be discarded.

Sort tools before packing

Group similar items together before placing anything in a box. Separate hand tools, power tools, batteries, fasteners, gardening equipment, and project supplies. This gives you a chance to remove broken tools, dried products, and duplicate items you no longer need.

Check the rules for anything hazardous or restricted. Movers generally cannot transport items such as gasoline, propane, ammunition, certain chemicals, or open containers of paint. Ask Miracle Movers about any questionable item before moving day. Never hide a restricted material inside a sealed box.

Keep small parts from disappearing

Screws, drill bits, sockets, and other small pieces are easiest to manage when they stay with their sets. Use small divided organizers, resealable bags, or sturdy containers with secure lids. Label every container clearly and place related containers together inside a larger box.

If you disassemble shelving or a workbench, put the hardware in a labeled bag. Secure that bag to the item when possible, or place all furniture hardware in one clearly marked parts box. Take a few photos before taking anything apart so you have a visual reference during reassembly.

Prepare hand tools and power tools

Close or cover sharp edges and blades. Lock folding tools in their closed positions, use protective sheaths when available, and wrap exposed cutting surfaces so they cannot slice through a box. Pack heavier hand tools in smaller boxes that are easier to lift safely.

Remove detachable batteries from power tools and follow the manufacturer’s instructions for storage and transportation. Coil cords loosely and secure them with reusable ties. If you still have a tool’s original case, use it. Otherwise, cushion the tool in a strong box and fill empty space so it cannot shift.

Pack with weight and balance in mind

A large box filled with metal tools can become dangerously heavy. Spread the weight among several smaller boxes, place heavier pieces at the bottom, and use packing material to prevent movement. Reinforce box bottoms with quality packing tape.

Label each box with both its contents and destination, such as “garage, hand tools” or “workshop, electrical supplies.” Mark boxes containing sharp or unusually heavy items so everyone handling them knows what to expect.

Plan for large equipment

Clean dirt and debris from lawn equipment, tool chests, and work surfaces before the move. Empty removable drawers when the manufacturer’s guidance calls for it, secure doors and moving parts, and keep keys together. Do not drain, disconnect, or dismantle powered equipment without following its manual or using a qualified professional when needed.

Tell your moving company about unusually heavy or bulky equipment while requesting a quote. Photos, dimensions, and approximate weights help the team understand what is involved. Miracle Movers provides packing and unpacking, loading and unloading, and local moving services, but the company needs accurate information to plan for your particular belongings.

Set up the new workspace more easily

Keep the small-parts box and the tools needed for basic setup easy to identify. Before unpacking everything, decide where shelves, benches, and large equipment will go. Open one category at a time so loose items do not spread across the new garage.
