Why Piano Moves Are Different
A typical upright piano weighs between 400 and 800 pounds. Grand pianos can reach 1,200 pounds or more. Beyond the weight, pianos are structurally complex and acoustically sensitive. The internal mechanics — the hammers, strings, pedal system, and soundboard — can shift or sustain damage if the instrument is tilted incorrectly, bounced on rough surfaces, or left in a hot moving truck for too long.
Florida’s climate adds another layer of concern. Humidity and heat can cause wood to swell, felt to deteriorate, and tuning to drift significantly. A piano moved without proper protection during a humid Brevard County summer can arrive in noticeably worse condition than when it left, even if there is no visible damage.
What to Ask Your Moving Company Before Moving Day
Not every moving company is equipped to handle pianos or oversized instruments. Before you book, ask these questions directly:
Do you have experience moving upright and grand pianos specifically? What kind of equipment do you use — piano boards, dollies, furniture pads, straps? Will the crew handling the piano have specific training for large instrument moves? Is there an additional fee for specialty items like pianos, and what does it cover? Do you offer any coverage or protection for high-value items in transit?

Preparing Your Piano for the Move
There are a few things you can do on your end to make the process go smoothly.
Measure the doorways and hallways in both the old and new home. Many piano problems happen not during transport but when navigating tight interior spaces. Knowing the dimensions of your instrument and your doorframes in advance allows the crew to plan the best approach.
Lock the keyboard lid before moving day. This protects the keys and keeps the lid from swinging open during transport.
Remove any fragile items from on top of the piano. Candelabras, framed photos, and decorative items should be packed separately.
If your piano has been in the same location for years, check the casters (wheels) to make sure they roll freely. Stuck or corroded casters can complicate the load-out.
And plan for a tuning after the move. Even a well-handled piano will likely need a professional tuning once it settles into its new environment. This is normal and expected — not a sign that anything went wrong.
Other Large Instruments Worth Mentioning
Pianos are the most common specialty instrument we encounter, but they are not the only ones.
Organ consoles, particularly older Hammond or pipe organ components, present similar challenges. Drum kits require careful disassembly and padding for hardware and shells. Large harps are fragile and top-heavy and benefit from custom padding. Vintage jukeboxes and arcade-style musical items also fall into this specialty category.
