Most people underestimate the kitchen. It looks manageable until you open the cabinets and realize just how many individual items are in there. Dishes, glasses, pots, pans, appliances, a full pantry, utensils, and a dozen things you forgot you owned. The kitchen typically takes longer to pack than any other room, and it produces more fragile items that need careful wrapping.
Start Earlier Than You Think You Need To
Begin with the items you rarely reach for: the holiday platters, the second set of dishes, the specialty gadgets that only come out a few times a year. Pack those weeks in advance and you will be surprised how much lighter the final kitchen push feels. In the last few days before the move, shift to disposable plates and cups so you can pack the everyday dishes without interrupting your routine.
Dishes and Glasses Need Individual Wrapping
Each plate should be wrapped individually in packing paper, then stacked vertically in the box rather than flat. Plates survive transport much better on their edge because the pressure is distributed along the rim. Wrap glasses individually, stuff the inside with crumpled paper, and pack them upside down with extra padding between each one.
Appliances Need Special Attention
Small appliances should be wrapped in moving blankets or bubble wrap and packed in boxes with padding on all sides. For large appliances like a refrigerator, empty and defrost it at least 24 hours before the move. Run the dishwasher and let it dry completely before it is moved.
The Pantry Is Always More Than You Expect
Start by eating through as much as you can in the weeks before your move. Donate non-perishables you will not realistically use. Pack sealed pantry items in small boxes because cans get heavy fast.
