You have closed on the house, signed the lease, or handed over the old keys. The physical move is done. Now comes the part that catches almost everyone off guard: updating your address everywhere it needs to go.
It sounds simple until you start making the list. For anyone relocating to or within Florida’s Space Coast, here is a practical breakdown of where to update your address and in what order.
Start With the Post Office
The first thing to do after any move is submit a change of address with the United States Postal Service. You can do this online at usps.com or in person at your local post office. USPS will forward your first-class mail from your old address to your new one for up to 12 months, giving you time to update everything else without missing important correspondence.
This is not a permanent fix, but it is a safety net. Do it before or on moving day if possible.
Florida Driver’s License and Vehicle Registration
Florida law requires you to update your driver’s license and vehicle registration within 30 days of moving. If you are new to Florida, you have a bit more time — typically 30 days from establishing Florida residency — to get a Florida license and register your vehicle here.
Visit a local Florida DMV office to handle both. In Brevard County, there are DMV locations in Melbourne, Titusville, and Palm Bay. Bring proof of your new address, your current license, and your vehicle title if you are transferring registration from another state.
Voter Registration
If you are registered to vote, your voter registration is tied to your old address. Update it through the Florida Division of Elections or at your county Supervisor of Elections office. In Brevard County, that is the Brevard County Supervisor of Elections office in Viera.
You will need to re-register or update before the next registration deadline if you want to vote in your new precinct.
Financial Institutions and Accounts
This one has the most items on the list. Work through it category by category:
Bank and credit union accounts — most can be updated online or by calling customer service. Credit cards — log in to each account and update your billing address. Investment and retirement accounts — Fidelity, Vanguard, Schwab, and similar platforms all allow online address updates. Insurance policies — health, auto, home or renter’s, and life insurance all need to reflect your new address. Lender or mortgage servicer — if you have a loan, notify your servicer of your updated mailing address.
Employer and Payroll
Notify your HR department or payroll provider of your new address. This affects your W-2 at the end of the year and any mailed paychecks or documents. Many companies handle this through their employee self-service portal.
Subscriptions, Deliveries, and Online Accounts
This is where people tend to forget the most. Go through the following and update your address wherever it appears:
Amazon and other online retailers. Subscription boxes and recurring deliveries. Streaming services that mail physical content (like DVD rentals). Magazine or newsletter subscriptions. Loyalty programs and reward accounts.
Medical and Healthcare Providers
Update your address with your primary care physician, dentist, pharmacy, vision provider, and any specialists you see. If you are moving to a new area, this is also a good time to begin finding new providers in Brevard County and transfer your medical records.
Children’s School Enrollment
If you have kids, contact both the school they are leaving and the school they are enrolling in. Brevard County Public Schools has a defined enrollment process based on your home address. The sooner you start this, the smoother the school transition will be.
Social Security Administration
If you receive Social Security benefits or have an account with the SSA, update your address through your My Social Security account online or by calling your local SSA office.
Miscellaneous but Important
A few more places that often get missed:
The IRS — file Form 8822 or update your address when you file your next tax return. Professional licenses — if you hold any Florida-issued professional license, update your address through the Department of Business and Professional Regulation. Pet microchip registry — if your pet is microchipped, update your contact information in the national registry associated with the chip.
