Stop feeding your fish about 24 hours before the move to reduce waste in the transport water. Have a plan for exactly how long the fish will be out of the tank, and try to keep that window as short as possible.
Breaking Down the Tank Safely
Drain most of the water but save a good portion in clean, sealed containers to use when you set the tank back up, since it carries beneficial bacteria your fish need. Wrap the tank itself in moving blankets, and pack decorations and filter media separately in bags with a bit of tank water to keep bacteria alive.
Transporting Fish and Water
Fish should travel in secure, well-sealed containers with enough water to keep them comfortable but not so full that sloshing becomes a problem. Keep them out of direct sun and extreme temperatures during the ride, which matters even more during a Florida summer move.
Setting the Tank Back Up Quickly
Reassemble the tank as soon as you arrive, using your saved water and media to jump-start the bacteria in the new setup. Reintroduce your fish gradually rather than all at once if the water temperature has shifted at all.
