Start With a Photo of Every Setup
Before you unplug a single cable, photograph your entire desk setup from multiple angles. Get close-ups of how your monitor arms are mounted, how your cable management is routed, and how your peripherals connect. These photos are your reference when you rebuild at the new location. This step takes five minutes and saves hours of frustration later.
Do the same for any networking equipment. Photograph how your modem, router, and any switches or access points are connected and positioned. Your internet provider may need to visit the new home, but knowing your existing setup means you can rebuild the local network exactly the way it worked before.
Pack Tech Separately From Everything Else
Computer equipment, monitors, external drives, and networking gear should be packed separately from the rest of the office. If you still have original boxes for any of this equipment, use them. Standing desks, L-shaped desks, and modular shelving systems require more planning than most people expect. Many standing desks have motorized components, control panels, and cables running through the frame. Photograph and label everything before disassembly, and keep all hardware in labeled bags.
L-shaped corner desks are often the trickiest piece in a home office to move because they are large, heavy, and designed to fit a specific corner configuration. Measure your new office before moving day to confirm the layout will work. Not every L-shaped desk fits in every corner, and discovering that on move day creates real problems.
Coordinate Your Internet Service Before the Move
This is the step people skip and regret. Contact your internet service provider at least two weeks before your move to schedule a transfer or installation at your new address. In Brevard County, options include Spectrum, AT&T Fiber, and some local providers depending on location.
Some areas on the Space Coast have faster service availability than others. If you are moving to a newer development in Viera or a waterfront property on Merritt Island, check availability ahead of time. Internet setup delays of a week or more are not uncommon, and if you work from home, that is a real problem. Having a mobile hotspot as a backup is a smart precaution.
Set Up the Office Before Unpacking Anything Else
If you work from home, your office should be the first room you get functional in the new place, not the last. Get the desk built, the monitors up, the cables connected, and the internet running before you unpack the kitchen, the bedroom, or anything else.
This might feel counterintuitive, but it means that if you have a work commitment the next morning, you are ready. It also gives you a quiet, organized space to work from while the rest of the house gets sorted over the following days.
